A swinger looking for some company

Sometimes, I think in English. I’m sorry if this is some kind of a snob thing for you, but I tend to think in english several times a day, and that means, whatever I’m thinking, sounds better if I communicate it the way I thought about it. And If you know me, you know I’m really, really concerned about communication.

I was one of those kids who were raised by T.V. I had no brothers or sisters, my mom wouldn´t let me watch Venezuelan channels because all they had on were soap operas, so I turned to HBO, Warner and Sony. I Watched Fraiser, Will and Grace, Friends, Seinfeld, Mad About You and the entire movie repertory HBO had before the age of 12, so, I can speak another language thanks to cable T.V and its subtitles, which were the ones that allowed me to make the connection between the enunciated word in English and the one written in Spanish.

This also means I deal with two kinds of humor. A very, veeery “gringo” sense of humor, based on ironies,  references, punch lines and metaphors; and then there’s my “latino” sense of humor, which is basically loud, also filled with references and a bit (or a lot) nasty. I’m a comedy swinger that’s now struggling to understand and laugh about Spanish sense of humor, because I live in Madrid without my family and I need to laugh sometime. Not quite there yet.

So there it is: I see things and my head becomes this kind of humor wheel of fortune in which I can get either a gringo or a latino joke out of it. So this calls for an extra effort because now I have to think on which friend is going to laugh about it depending on the joke’s nationality. Fun, ha?  So, yes, I also have friends categorized by jokes.  I’m blessed to have some swingers like myself, including my boyfriend, to which I can ramble about in both languages without feeling like a patchwork blanket. (Shout out to FLAMA, because they know the struggle).

But there’s this special category, a very privileged one, that’s only for references (in english or spanish). Yes, Clueless references, Seinfeld references, Mean Girls references, Disney references, classical movie references, comic references, new youtubers references and specially, SPECIALLY, Friends references. You, you lovingly, adorable and fantastic creatures, you make my life full of color and light, and are the ones that make me feel less stupid every time I try to be naughty saying “Graaaandma’s chicken saaalad”.

Sincerely, bored Silvia.
